28 Managing wireless locating
WSM wireless locating enables you to locate wireless clients (WiFi mobile phones, PDAs, terminals
installed with the iNode client, and laptops) and APs in 802.11 networks.
Overview
Locating modes
WSM supports real-time locating (MU locating and iNode-based sampling), X-Share locating, AP-
based locating, and GIS locating.
Priorities of locations obtained through real-time locating, X-Share locating, AP-based locating are in
descending order. If all the above locating methods fail to locate a client, WSM assumes that the
client is near the associated AP.
MU locating
In MU locating, APs scan each channel to search signals of wireless clients and record the RSSIs.
WSM periodically collects the AP scan data, and locates wireless clients.
Only APs of specific models support MU locating.
In addition to locating clients, MU locating supports the following functions:
•
Recording roaming history of clients.
•
Tracking clients in the location view in real time.
•
Allowing you to view roaming history of clients in location view.
•
Allowing you to view the heat map for each client during the specified period in location view.
•
Allowing you to draw a digital fence to collect locations in an area.
iNode-based sampling
Use iNode-based sampling in cooperation with UAM and iNode client. To use iNode-based
sampling, add an access user in UAM as a target user in WSM. The access user must use a terminal
installed with iNode client to access the wireless network.
In iNode-based sampling, the iNode client scans each channel to detect wireless signals of APs,
records the RSSIs, and sends the data to WSM for WSM to locate the iNode client.
In addition to locating terminals, iNode-based sampling supports the following functions:
•
Recording roaming history of terminals.
•
Tracking terminals in the location view in real time.
•
Allowing you to view roaming history of terminals in location view.
•
Allowing you to configure an area policy in location view to permit or deny user access.
•
Sampling APs in iNode-based sampling can operate in any mode.
