NOTE
VPLS auto-discovery is not compatible in multi vendor environment. It must only be used among
Brocade MLX series and Brocade NetIron XMR devices.
NOTE
MPLS cannot be configured on the system globally when a NI-MLX-10Gx8-D card is installed.
This chapter describes how to configure the Brocade device to automatically discover Virtual
Private LAN Services (VPLS) endpoints that are part of the same VPLS domain.
VPLS is a method for carrying Layer 2 frames between Customer Edge (CE) devices across a
Multi-Protocol Label Switched (MPLS) domain. Information about VPLS, how it works, and how to
manually configure it is discussed in the
Chapter 3, “Configuring MPLS Virtual Private LAN
In releases prior to NetIron R04.0.00 on Brocade devices, when setting up a VPLS network and
after manually creating VPLS instances, the user must manually configure all VPLS peers
associated with each VPLS instance.
Starting with the NetIron R04.0.00, the implementation of BGP-based auto-discovery for VPLS
(also called VPLS auto-discovery) eliminates the need for manual configuration of VPLS peers for
every VPLS instance configured on the device. The implementation complies with the Internet draft
draft-ietf-l2vpn-signaling-08. Using the services of Border Gateway Protocol version 4 (BGP4) and
Label Distribution Protocol (LDP), VPLS auto-discovery enables a device to automatically discover
other VPLS Provider Edge (PE) devices that are part of the same VPLS domain, and to detect and
converge when other PE routers are added to or removed from the VPLS domain.
