Working with scene objects
If a mask is applied to a scene, but the masked object is not part of a group in the scene,
the mask will punch through to black, which may include any keyer behind it (figure
6-5
).
Figure 6-5. If the mask object is not part of a group, the mask drills down to black layer
Animation parameters that were available for the group or the individual objects are all still
available and remain unchanged. You can animate a mask group as a whole group, or
animate as individual objects within the group. Note however, that the mask is generated
based on the alpha values within the group’s original boundaries. That means that if the
mask is animated out of the group’s original area, the mask will not be visible as it moves
beyond the original boundaries (figure
6-6
). Also, the bounding box of the mask is static.
Therefore, any cropping will happen on the static box before any animation.

The original mask
As the mask is animated, the original
boundary (straight line) is exposed.
