Adding and preparing objects on the Xstudio canvas
Previewing a scene’s layout on a device during
development
As you are creating a scene in Design mode, Xstudio’s Preview feature allows you to see
exactly what the scene will look like on air by previewing it on the output device (i.e.
Software CG) that is currently connected. This ensures the accuracy of your scene’s layout.
In Preview mode, as you add, move and edit objects on the scene, the preview is updated
on the output device in real-time, so you can see the results of any edits that you make to
the scene right away. For example, figure
demonstrates that you can add a Text2D
primitive object to the scene, move, rotate, resize and even change some of the font
properties. All of these edits will be previewed on the Software CG’s output display.

Xstudio’s preview mode is a static display of the scene ‘s layout, not its playout. It is
intended to preview the look of the scene, not the scene’s behavior. Therefore, dynamic
assets like cel animations, clips and animated properties do not playout in preview mode.
To preview playout, use Xstudio’s Production mode.
The scene does not have to be saved or even published to the device to be previewed in
Xstudio’s Preview mode. However, assets (i.e. images, clips, cel animations...etc) from the
Asset Browser must be published to the device in order to be viewed. If you add an asset
to the scene that has not yet been published, the asset will appear on the scene, but not in
the preview. See
for instructions on manually publishing an asset to a device.
To preview a scene’s layout on a device during development:
1.
Verify that Xstudio is actively connected to a playout device.
2.
With the project window opened to the scene, click the P
UBLISH
icon
on the desktop
while holding down the C
TRL
key. The P
REVIEW
icon
replaces the Publish icon.
3.
Add primitives or assets to the scene canvas, or move or edit objects that are already
on the canvas.
The changes to the scene will appear on the output device’s display immediately.
Remember to save the project to retain any changes or edits.
