Introduction

1.1

Overview

The ARTM-831X is a rear transition module specifically designed for use in combination with
the ATCA-8310 (Windsor) front board. The ARTM-831X supports the "media gateway on a
board" approach of the ATCA-8310 product, providing several connectivity variants, ranging
from basic IP connections to several TDM (Time Division Multiplex) expansions including
E1/T1, DS3/E3 and OC3/OC12 - SDH/Sonet.

All TDM connectivity options are built around a central TDM timeslot interchanging device
(TSI), that on its part provides the connectivity to the front board's communication DSP
resources.

The ARTM-831X is designed for all synchronous operation by means of the synchronous clocks
(IP & TDM) supplied from the front board's eSETS device. On the other hand, it provides input
reference clocks from any IP or TDM source towards the eSETS via a programmable clock
selector device.

Additionally, sideband signals are utilized to support fault detection and redundant operation
of two ATCA-8310 units (i.e. line protection, equipment protection and automatic protection
switching for SDH/Sonet signals).

The design of the ARTM-831X is following the standards of PICMG 3.0 Revision 1.0
AdvancedTCA Base Specification and PICMG 3.1 Revision 1.0 Specification Ethernet/Fiber
Channel for Advanced TCA Systems.

The ARTM-831X assembly is a dual PCB stacked mounting type of construction enabling the
complexity and the diversity of I/O combinations that are possible with the ATCA-8310. Three
different PCA designs allow for various combinations via factory assembly and component
population options.
