disk drive

A device that stores data on a disk and provides random access to addressable locations on the
disk. There are two types of disk drives:

On magnetic drives, access is provided by magnetic read/write heads.

On optical drives, access is provided by a low-intensity laser beam.

disk volume

A logical disk drive. A volume can be one or two physical drives. In NonStop servers, volumes
have names that begin with a dollar sign ($), such as $DATA.

domain

A set of objects on the

server

over which control or ownership is maintained.

download

To transfer software from one location to another, where the transferring entity initiates the transfer.

dump

To copy the contents of a

processor's

memory onto disk or magnetic tape for later analysis, as

in a tape dump.

duplex

Having two active processor elements, each contained in a separate Blade Element, per logical
processor. Also called dual-modular redundancy (DMR).

dynamic
information

Information that represents the set of supported resources that actually exist in the current
configuration of the

server

. Dynamic information is gathered from a server through the process

of

discovery

.

E

EMU
(Environmental
Monitoring Unit)

An element which monitors the status of an enclosure, including the power, air temperature, and
blower status. The EMU detects problems and displays and reports these conditions to a user and
the controller. In some cases, the EMU implements corrective action.

enclosure

A single sheet-metal structure and its enclosed set of system components.

Ethernet

A local area network (LAN) that uses the carrier sense multiple access with collision detection
(CSMA/CD) access method on a bus topology and is the basis for the IEEE 802.3 standard.

Ethernet 4
ServerNet adapter
(E4SA)

A ServerNet adapter for Ethernet local area networks (LANs) that contains four Ethernet ports.

Event Management
Service (EMS)

A Distributed Systems Management (DSM) product that is used to provide event collection, event
logging, and event distribution facilities. EMS provides different event descriptions for interactive
and programmatic interfaces, lets an operator or an application select specific event-message
data, and allows for flexible distribution of

event messages

within a

system

or

network

.

event message

The text intended for a system operator that describes a change in some condition in the

system

or

network

, whether minor or serious. The change of condition is called an event. Events can be

operational errors, notifications of limits exceeded, requests for actions needed, and so forth.

Event Management Service (EMS)

formatted events can be viewed by the

OSM Event Viewer

.

Expand network

The HP NonStop™ operating system network that extends the concept of fault-tolerant operation
to networks of geographically distributed HP NonStop™ systems. If the network is properly
designed, communication paths are constantly available even if a single line failure or component
failure occurs.

external fabric
connection

The low-level ServerNet connection between a node and one of the external ServerNet fabrics.
Each node has an X and a Y connection to the external fabrics.

external ServerNet
fabrics

The fabrics that link systems in a ServerNet cluster.

external ServerNet
X or Y fabric

The X or Y fabric that links systems in a ServerNet cluster.

F

fabric

A complex set of interconnections through which there can be multiple and (to the user) unknown
paths from point to point. The term fabric is used to refer to the X or Y portion of the ServerNet
communications network; for example, the X fabric.
