HP

The history of Hewlett-Packard (HP) is a history of success, achieved through talent and hard work of two prolific inventors and businessmen, David Packard and William Hewlett, as well as of their company’s employees. The basis of many modern technologies constitute developments and inventions of HP, which is a world leader in the field of information and computer technologies.

The company was established in 1934 by graduates of Stanford University, William Hewlett and David Packard. The names of the company founders gave birth to the name of the company Hewlett-Packard, which started its business with the production of test equipment.

Tone generator is one of the first inventions appeared when the electronics was completely an unexplored area. When Hewlett-Packard has released its first product, a precision audio-frequency oscillator HP Model 200A, its price $ 54.40 was several times lower than the competitors’ one, which was due to the introduction of an innovation, namely, the alternator frequency was stabilized by a small light bulb. Walt Disney Studio, one of the first customers of the company, bought eight Model 200B oscillators for use in the movie.

During World War II, Hewlett-Packard was successfully developing on account of government contracts. It has been involved in technology of microwave engineering. The Navy needed special devices to be protected against German submarines. HP has managed to create signal generators and suppressors of radar signals and has become a recognized leader in this field. In 1943 its revenues reached almost one million dollars.

In the 1960s the company presented unique solutions to the market. According to “Wired” magazine, it was Hewlett-Packard that released the world's first personal computer, when in 1968 a desktop scientific programmable calculator HP 9100A appeared in the market. The calculator had the ability to store programs on magnetic cards and allowed to perform complex calculations without the use of bulky computers.

The world's first scientific pocket calculator HP-35 was released in 1972. This invention has become a legend and went down in the history as one of the products that changed the world. In 1974 the company introduced the world's first programmable calculator HP-65, which used dynamic random access memory 4K byte instead of magnetic memory. In 1972 the company launched the first general-purpose computer HP3000, which is used both for solving complex engineering tasks and performing regular office work.

Over the years this short abbreviation HP has become identical with innovation and advance. Throughout its history Hewlett-Packard has been investing in the development of new products, solutions and technologies contributing to growth of business performance, realization of social projects and advance in the life of customers.

William Hewlett and David Packard, two founders of a successful and profitable business, were not focused solely on profits. Their sincere appreciation and esteem to other people is a matter of respect. Through their management policy they demonstrated their attitude to HP employees’ needs, offering them generous benefits, including medical insurance to decide health problem, which was not a common practice in those times.

William Hewlett in the mid-sixties created a fund to provide financial support to educational institutions and organizations. David Packard and his wife in 1978 established the Fund Monterey Bay Aquarium and donated $55 million for creating a new oceanarium, which was opened in 1984. In 1986 they donated $40 million for the construction of Lucile Packard Children's Hospital at Stanford University, which was opened in 1991.
