Summary

Aliases are names that you can assign to individual input ports. (Aliases do not apply to output
ports.) Generally, individual ports do not have names because they belong to devices which do
have names. The device names appear on control panels and are used to identify the ports on
various (virtual) levels of the devices.

The reasons for creating aliases are many and varied. For example, one reason is to present a
different name for the audio ports and video port of a “bars and tone” signal.

Note:

1 With aliases, it is individual ports that are named. Aliases are not global in any way.

2 It is only on control panels that aliases are used. A panel displays an alias where it displays a

port, such as when the operator is performing level selection.

3 An alias overrides the name of the device to which the port belongs, but for that port only.

Other ports that are not given aliases still use the device name.

4 The same alias can be applied to any or all ports you choose.
