Virtual Levels and Level Sets

Introduction

Notes

1 There is a difference between a virtual level type and the virtual level itself: a virtual level type

is used to name a virtual level. That type (or name) can represent several virtual levels in dif-
ferent level sets. It is the virtual level’s name that appears on control panels, regardless of the
level set.

2 “Takes” can occur between devices within a level set or between the same virtual levels of

devices in different level sets.

3 Tielines allow routing between different physical levels. Without tieline(s), signals cannot be

routed between different physical levels. For more information, see

Tielines

on page 407.

Example

Consider an NV9000 system that has two level sets:

Level set A that supports HD only (through router A).

Level set B, that supports HD plus AES1/2, AES3/4, AES5/6, and AES7/8. In this case, router B
handles the HD video and router C handles the audio.

With three routers, three physical levels are defined:

HDA, for router A

HDB, for router B

AES, for router C

(without regard to the partition sizes).

Then, level set A includes 1 virtual level:

HD, supported by physical level HDA (in router A).

And level set B includes 5 virtual levels:

HD, supported by physical level HDB (in router B)

AES1/2, supported by physical level AES (in router C)

AES3/4, supported by physical level AES (in router C)

AES5/6, supported by physical level AES (in router C)

AES7/8, supported by physical level AES (in router C)

Observe that virtual levels named HD occur in both level sets. They are distinct levels but have
the same name. Operators will see “HD” as a displayed level name.

Also note that the 4 different AES virtual levels all use the same physical level.

Pages and Tables

All configuration pages and tables for level sets reference the same data. Data entered or
updated in one page are simultaneously available in other pages.

In general, level sets are added using the ‘Add Level Set’ page. You can access that page through
the ‘Add Level Set’ button of the ‘Level Sets’ page of the ‘Configuration’ pane or directly through
the ‘Tasks’ pane.

The ‘Level Sets’ page (under the ‘Configuration’ pane) lists all level sets. You can add, delete, or
edit level sets in this page.
