Recommended Audio Mapping Values
The following sections outline recommended values for up-mixing and
down-mixing various kinds of audio groups. These values have been care-
fully tested and represent a good compromise of performance over a wide
variety of program material. Other mappings are possible, but we recom-
mend that you start with these values.
Mono Sources
Figure 89 on page 171 shows surround mixing with a mono source mapped
to the center or the dialog channel, of the surround output. This mixing is
the recommended practice by many surround producers. However, some
listeners prefer to hear something from the left and right speakers even
with a mono source. While others prefer to always have something in the
center or dialog channel. Two other approaches to mono up-mixing are
shown in
Figure 90 on page 171 and Figure 91 on page 172 .
The Mono source choices are:
• Mono-to-stereo (mono spread equally over left and right)
• Mono-to-surround (mono mapped to surround three different ways)
• Mono-to-mono (1:1 mapping)
