1.1 Introduction
This section describes the following topics that you need to know before you configure WAN
interfaces and link layer protocols:
• WAN interface types
• Link layer protocols of WAN
1.1.1 WAN interface types
Interface types
Interfaces help exchange data and interact with other devices on the network. They are
divided into physical and logical interfaces.
• Physical interfaces
Physical interfaces have corresponding physical components. They are divided into two
types.
- Local Area Network (LAN) interfaces: LAN interfaces are mainly Ethernet interfaces
through which routers exchange data with devices in a LAN.
- Wide Area Network (WAN) interfaces: WAN interfaces include the serial, E1, CE1,
CT1,CE3,POS, CPOS, and ATM interface through which routers exchange data with
devices of external networks.
• Logical interfaces
Logical interfaces, like the sub-interface, Virtual-Template, Virtual-Ethernet, LoopBack,
and NULL interface do not physically exist, you instead create them through
configuration.
Interface views and prompts
Command views and prompts of WAN physical interfaces supported by the SR8000 are
shown in Table 1-1; command views and prompts of logical interfaces are shown in Table 1-2.
