Chapter 2: Starting a Local or Remote Management Session

Remote Management Session

You can use any workstation on your network that has the Telnet
application installed to manage a Converteon™ chassis. This type of
management session is referred to as a remote management session
because you do not have to be physically close to the chassis to start the
session, such as with a local management session.

In terms of functionality, there are almost no differences between
managing a chassis locally through the RS-232 terminal port and remotely
with the Telnet application. You see the same menu selections and have
nearly the same management capabilities.

If the Converteon™ chassis is in a TCP/IP environment, remote
management is possible only after the chassis has been assigned an IP
address and subnet mask through a local management session.

Starting a

Remote

Management

Session

To start a remote management session, specify the IP address of the
chassis in the Telnet application protocol and enter a username and
password when prompted.

To configure a chassis settings, enter “manager” as the user name. The
default password for manager access is “friend.” To just view the settings,
enter “operator” as the username. The default password for operator
access is “operator.” User names and passwords are case sensitive. For
information on the two access levels, refer to “Configuring Management
Access” on page 50.

Note

You can run only one Telnet management session on a
Converteon™ chassis at a time. Additionally, you cannot run both a
remote management session and a local management session on
the same chassis at the same time.

Quitting from a

Remote

Management

Session

To end a remote management session, return to the Main Menu and
select Quit.

You should always be sure to exit from a management session when you
are finished managing a Converteon™ chassis. This can prevent
unauthorized changes to a chassis’ configuration should you leave your
workstation unattended.
