9-2 PC Performance for ProcessLogix Systems

ProcessLogix

ProcessLogix R400.0 is a set of applications that cover two phases of
the Control Life Cycle: Configuration and Operation.

During the Configuration Phase, Stand-alone type applications are
used to configure the Control Hardware and Software for the user’s
particular Process. Hardware components are defined, strategies are
implemented, limits calculated, etc.

Once configuration of all the components are completed, the system
then transforms its role to operational monitoring of the process. For
this phase, the ProcessLogix® system is designed to run as a
traditional Client/Server system.

Performance

Performance is a very generic phrase to describe the overall
experience of a group of events of the system. Therefore, it is
interpretive to not only the evaluator, but also the process of events.
Generally, it is used to describe the speediness of the system to react
to series of tasks. For Process Control systems, performance also
includes the ability to perform those tasks in a reliable manner. Two
aspects of performance apply: overall system and individual
application/component performance.

Overall system performance can often be interchanged with reliability.
Reliability is most affected by the configuration of drivers and related
software that make up the system. Individual application/component
performance on the other hand, can often be configured through the
use of software settings and hardware components. Together, these
effect the overall experience and speediness of the system to perform
tasks.

Process Control System Performance Needs

Reliability and system availability is the primary concern of Process
Control Systems. The main goal is to make sure that the system is not
only available to the user at any point it time, but that the application
they are using is responsive and presenting the correct data.
