G - Group Address
This option defines a particular address as the Group Address for a downstream
concentrator. The MultiPro only polls this address and expects the downstream
device to respond with messages for any of the specifically defined stations on that
concentrator. The downstream device may send a message for any device each time
a group poll is received.
Using Group and
Specific Polling on
the Same Port
The situation may arise where the MultiPro polls devices on a Multipoint circuit.
One drop of the circuit may have a concentrator capable of being group polled,
while another drop may consist of one or two terminals that require specific
polling. To use group polling, the terminal port parameter Algorithm must be set to
GROUP. This causes the MultiPro to poll only those stations defined as group
addresses. In a mixed environment the real group address of the downstream
concentrator is marked as a group address as well as the individual stations that
require specific polling. In Figure 10-12, the poll string consists of a group poll to
the concentrator as well as a poll to each of the individual terminals. By defining
the addresses this way, the MultiPro treats it as though there are three
group-poll-capable devices, when in fact the ultimate goal was to mix group and
specific polling on one port.
