Chapter 8

Record your voice or a musical instrument

If you want to improve a difficult part of a certain passage, you can use a combination of the
Cycle and Autopunch functions. Cycle mode recording allows you to practice as many times
as you like before performing the final take. On each cycle pass, only events or audio that falls
within the area defined by the autopunch locators is recorded. This lets you make use of the
preceding song section to “get into the groove.”

Replace audio recordings

You can record over an existing audio recording, or a portion of it, replacing the original
recording with the new recording.

Replace recording is only available when Show Advanced Tools is selected in the Advanced

preferences pane.

Replace an audio recording

1

Click the Replace button in the control bar.

Note: You can add the Replace button by customizing the control bar. For information, see

Customize the control bar

.

2

Click the Record Enable button in the track header of the track you want to record to.

3

Move the playhead to the point in the ruler where you want to start recording.

By default, Logic Pro includes a metronome—a steady beat to help you play in time
while recording.

4

Do one of the following:

If you only want Logic Pro to play a one-measure count-in before recording starts, Control-click
the Metronome button in the control bar, choose Metronome Settings from the shortcut
menu, then select the “Only during count-in” checkbox.

Set the playhead a few beats before the point where you want the recording to begin, to give
yourself time to start playing.

5

Click the Record button

in the control bar (or press R) to start recording.

6

Start singing or play your instrument.

7

Click the Stop button in the control bar (or press the Space bar) to stop recording.

The original recording is replaced with the new recording.
