Glossary-5
K
Key
(1) An effect in which a portion of the back-
ground video picture is replaced by another
picture or title
(2) The signal which is used to pass or block
portions of the background and fill video sig-
nals.
Keyboard
A panel with pushbutton keys (generally al-
phanumeric) that provides the human inter-
face into an electronics system.
Keyframe
A point in time during an effect where the
placement and appearance of the manipulat-
ed picture is completely defined. This
“frame” (or minimum unit of time) is the
“key” to the make-up of the picture (and mo-
tion) at and about this instant in time. A key-
frame defines all possible parameters to the
system for that effect time, including: picture
size and position, sources, recursive effects,
background, borders, etc.
Key Fill
In a key effect, the video signal that “fills the
hole” cut in background video by the key
source. Key fill may be the key video or mod-
ified key video (also see Matte Fill).
Key Invert
(1) A key mode which inverts the polarity of
the key to allow dark areas of the source vid-
eo to cut holes in background.
(2) a chroma key mode which inverts the
foreground and background fill positions.
Key Video
The video selected on a key bus which may
be the key fill, the key source, or both.
Kurl
Special non-linear Krystal transformations
that include Page Turn, Page Roll, Ripple,
Slits, Sphere, Pos Mod, Size Mod, Rings, and
Splash.
L
Linear
In path control, denotes a linear interpola-
tion between keyframes; no acceleration or
deceleration is applied— change is mechani-
cal having a constant velocity.
Linear Key
A key which is processed at or near unity
gain by the switcher. Clip and gain control
have very small adjustment ranges, and key-
ing is performed using the luminance values
of the linear key source. Normally used
when the source’s key signal has already
been properly shaped.
Logical Channel
Control channels (numbered 1-4 on the pan-
el) assignable to control Krystal physical
channels.
Low Tally
Buttons on the Control Panel at lowered illu-
mination. (When fully illuminated they are
high tally.)
Luminance
The quantitative attribute of light, measured
as luminous intensity. Directly related to
brightness.
M
Macro
A function where sequences of button press-
es may be defined and recalled with a single
button push.
