•
The coolant level should be between 1”-4”
(2.54cm-10.16cm) deep, as indicated by the two
lines on the reservoir. See Figure 8.60.
NOTE: The cover snaps-off of the reservoir for
filling. The over-flow tube that connects it to the
neck of the radiator can also be pulled-out easily
for filling with a funnel.
•
If the level is low, coolant added should conform
to the description in the Coolant Requirements
section of this chapter. Do not add straight water
to the cooling system.
•
If the level is low, identify the reason. Coolant
should not be lost from the system in normal
use. Inspect and pressure-test the cooling sys-
tem to find any leakage. If none is revealed,
contact the partnering Caterpillar dealer to con-
duct a leak-down test on the engine.
•
Make any necessary repairs before returning the
vehicle to service.
4.
Draining and filling coolant
NOTE: Before draining the coolant, pressure
test the cooling system and inspect it for any
signs of leakage. Most cooling system repairs
require at least a partial draining of the system.
It makes sense to do any necessary repairs in
conjunction with coolant replacement.
4a. Remove the splash shield as described in
the water pump and alternator belt section
of this manual.
4b. Clean the area where the hose leading to
the water pump connects to the return
pipe from the radiator.
4c. Place a catch pan of at least 2 gallons (7.5
L) under the connection.
4d. Loosen the hose clamp using a 5/16”
driver or screwdriver, and separate the
hose from the return pipe.
See Figure 8.61.
4e. Temporarily install a short length of 7/8”
I.D. hose on the return pipe to direct the
coolant into the catch pan.
4f. Loosen, then remove the radiator cap,
breaking the vacuum at the far end of the
system to facilitate draining.
