7a. With the engine turned-off and cool, tilt the

passenger seat forward to reveal the fuel
filter.

7b. Place a suitable container under the fuel

filter. A shallow container that fits
between the coolant pipe and the filter is
best. See Figure 8.16.

NOTE: Glass bottles are handy for examining
the drained fuel for water or other contaminants,
but SHOULD NOT be used for storage of fuel.

7c. Rotate the drain fitting counter-clockwise

(as seen from below) to open it. Use
hand pressure only, no tools.

7d. Watch the fluid that exits the drain tube

into the catch-pan or bottle. The fitting
allows fuel to come out a port in the fitting,
while air enters around the perimeter.

7e. When uncontaminated fuel comes out,

close the fitting. Use hand pressure only,
no tools.

7f. Wipe-up any spilled fuel and test-run the

engine. Dispose of any waste fuel in a
safe, legal and environmentally responsi-
ble manner.

8.

Fuel Filter Maintenance: changing filter

CAUTION: Diesel fuel is flammable. Do not
service the fuel filter or any other part of the fuel
system when the engine is hot or near any
source of potential ignition.

CAUTION: Diesel fuel is toxic. Dispose of any
waste fuel in a safe and environmentally respon-
sible manner. Contact your local EPA office for
proper disposal methods and recycling center
locations.

CAUTION: Diesel fuel injection systems operate
at pressures that are high enough to penetrate
the skin. If any high pressure leak is suspected,
direct exposure to the fuel system when it is in
operation is extremely dangerous and can be
fatal. If fluid is injected into your skin get medical
treatment immediately. Seek treatment from a
doctor that is familiar with this type of injury.

NOTE: Fuel is transferred from the tank to the
injector pump by a low pressure pump. The
injector pump and injector lines on the engine
operate at high pressure.

8a. Replace the fuel filter every 500 hrs. of

operation or two years.

8b. With the engine turned-off and cool, tilt the

passenger seat forward to reveal the fuel
filter.

8c. Clamp the fuel line that leads from the tank

to the filter. There is no manual shut-off
valve in the system.

8d. Place a suitable container under the fuel

filter. A shallow container that fits
between the coolant pipe and the filter is
best.

8e. Rotate the drain fitting counter-clockwise

(as seen from below) to open it. Use
hand pressure only, no tools.
