6g. Clean thoroughly around the filter before

removing it.

6h. Use an appropriate filter wrench to remove

the oil filter from the engine.
See Figure 8.13.

NOTE: Use of filters other than Caterpillar
brand is not recommended. Caterpillar part
number 150-4140.

NOTE: DO NOT prime the oil filter by adding oil
to it before installation. Caterpillar maintains that
adding oil directly to the inside of the filter intro-
duces unfiltered oil to the system.

6i. Lubricate the filter gasket with fresh motor

oil, and install the filter. Tighten the filter
by hand 3/4 to 1 turn past the point where
the filter gasket contacts the filter housing.

6j. Install the drain plug with a new sealing

washer.

6k. Fill the engine with the correct grade of oil

through the filer cap in the valve cover.
Actual oil volume including the oil filter is
roughly 2.85 Qts. (2.7L.).

6l. Disconnect the fuel solenoid by unplugging

the connection from the engine wiring har-
ness. See Figure 8.14.

6m. Crank the starter motor until the “OIL” light

on the instrument cluster goes-out. Do
not exceed 30 seconds of cranking. If
more than one interval is needed, give the
starter motor two minutes to cool down
before repeat cranking.

6n. Re-connect the fuel solenoid and inspect

around the oil filter for any oil leakage.

6o. Start the engine, and allow it to run at low

idle for two minutes. Monitor the filter for
any leakage while the engine runs.

6p. Turn-off the engine and allow at least 10

minutes drain-back time for the oil to
return to the sump.

6q. Check the oil level using the dipstick. The

oil level should be at the top of the two
notch on the dip-stick that define the
acceptable operating level. After wiping-
clean, fully inserting and withdrawing the
dipstick the level will be indicated by the
lowest spot on the dipstick that is com-
pletely covered with oil.
