FRONT DIFFERENTIAL REMOVAL

1.

Remove one front axle shaft as described in the
FRONT HALF SHAFT REMOVAL section of this
chapter. It does not matter which one is
removed.

2.

Disconnect the front drive shaft and unbolt the
front differential as described in the FRONT
DRIVE SHAFT REMOVAL section of this chap-
ter.

3.

After the pinion shaft on the front differential is
separated from the drive shaft, disconnect the
second axle in the same manner that the first
axle was disconnected. Carefully lift the front
differential out of the vehicle.

NOTE: On diesel powered vehicles it will be
necessary to turn the differential on its side and
pull it out from the front of the vehicle.

4.

Assembly notes:

Inspect the splines and shaft seals before install-
ing the front differential. Make any necessary
repairs before reassembly.

Lubricate the Splined joints with anti-seize com-
pound on assembly.

Reverse the removal procedure to install the
front drive shaft.

Replace any worn hardware or components
before reassembly.
If the self-locking feature of any of the nuts is
degraded, replace the nuts or apply thread lock-
ing compound such as Loctite® 242 (blue) to the
threads.

When installing the front differential, install all of
the hardware that secures the differential and
torque bracket, then go back and tighten it.

When locating the brush guard, slip it straight on
from the front, then secure it by inserting the
bolts in the holes for the top two attachment
points. Once it is held in position, insert the
remaining bolts, then install and tighten the nuts.

Check or fill the differential with lubricant before
operating the vehicle, even if it is “supposed” to
be full.

Tighten the hardware to the torques specified in
the accompanying table:

** Install with permanent thread locking compound
such as Loctite®

262 (red).

5.

Test-run the vehicle in a safe area before return-
ing it to service.
