The left side of the housing contains a small
electromagnet. See Figure 3.46.
•
The magnet acts on a toothed steel ring.
•
The toothed steel ring is secured by an internal
snap ring.
•
A pair of brass washers ride between the snap
ring and the toothed steel ring.

The toothed ring does not lock solidly to the
housing when the magnet is engaged. The
magnet does apply drag to the ring when ener-
gized. See Figure 3.47.
•
The toothed ring engages the end of a cage that
surrounds two sets of rollers. See Figure 3.48.
NOTE: Each roller is centered in its recess in the
cage by a set of springs.
•
The left side drive spool is carried in the bearing
that is held behind the toothed ring. One set of
rollers rides on the left drive spool
•
The right side drive spool fits into the second set
of rollers.
•
A thrust bearing separates the two drive spools.
The bearing seats over a pilot boss on the left
spool.
