7.18 Resistance Fault Locator (RFL)

Resistance Fault Locator (RFL) testing is a powerful measurement that is able to locate shorts between tip to
ring, tip to ground or ring to ground. These faults can be called shorts, grounds or crosses. The RFL
measurement used by the CableSHARK is referred to as a “separate good pair” test. This means the user
must have a good pair to compare against.

1. Attached a test cable to the 2Wire TX/RX port of the CableSHARK and connect the Tip, Ring, and

Ground leads to the circuit. Attach the RFL test cable (Yellow and Green leads) to a separate good pair.

2. From the Main Menu, select CABLE TESTS (function button F1).
3. Choose RESISTANCE FAULT LOCATOR from the pop-up menu.
4. Press the RUN / STOP button to start the test. Follow the instructions on screen to determine where the

far end strap is to be placed.

5. Results will provide a user with a clear indication of the distance to the fault, the distance from the fault

to the strap and the distance from the CableSHARK to the strap.

To repeat the test, press the RUN/STOP button.

7.19 K-Test

K-test testing is a powerful measurement that is able to locate shorts between tip to ring, tip to ground or ring
to ground. These faults can be called shorts, grounds or crosses. This test does not need a separate good
pair like the RFL test does.

1. From the Main Menu, select CABLE TESTS (function button F1).
2. Choose K-TEST from the pop-up menu.
3. Press the RUN / STOP button to start the test. Follow the instructions on screen to determine how to

connect the test cable and where the far end strap is to be placed.

4. Results will provide a user with a clear indication of the distance to the fault, the distance from the fault

to the strap and the distance from the CableSHARK to the strap.

To repeat the test, press the RUN/STOP button.
