5.2.2 Single-Ended Testing

The CableSHARK can perform Single-Ended tests on a copper telco cable to see if the line can carry DSL
technologies such as ADSL2+, SHDSL, and VDSL. Frequency Response (Single-Ended selected), Time
Domain Reflectometry, Digital MultiMeter, Power Spectral Density and Impulse Noise tests are examples of
single-ended tests with the CableSHARK. For single-ended tests, ensure that the cable to be tested is not
match-terminated at the far end. The far end should be an open or short circuit for best results. The
CableSHARK can operate, using most measurements, if there is an active ADSL CPE modem, subscriber
telephone, POTS Splitter/microfilter, active DSLAM, or Class 5 Voice Switch at the far end however these
devices may affect the measurements. For optimal results, measure the cable from both ends using the
included Single-Ended tests. This will help compensate for any irregularities caused by cable type, cable size
and any impairments that can occur or are resident on the line at the time of testing.

Note: Single-Ended testing can only give a partial picture of cable quality if testing is
done from one end only. For an accurate picture of cable quality, single-ended
testing should be done from both ends of a cable. This is a benefit to the user since
they will get a total view of cable quality plus the added bonus of increasing their test
distances.

Figure 5.2.2A shows the CableSHARK connected to the line. Notice that at the Central Office end, the cable
is not match terminated. Testing from the Central Office to Subscriber can also be completed this way.
Appendix A - Ideal Cable Results, will show what an ideal cable frequency response should resemble.
