7.17 Ground Resistance Test
Note: This is a Single-ended test.
The CableSHARK’s Ground Resistance (also known as Station Ground) test allows technicians to verify that
correct grounding rules are being followed at the location under test. An adequate station ground and
ground distribution system provides a common electrical reference point for all telecommunications
equipment in the installation and minimizes the danger of electrical potential between various equipments
and between equipments and the earth.
1. From the Main Menu, select CABLE TESTS (function button F1).
2. Choose GROUND RESISTANCE from the pop-up menu. Ensure the RING connection of the
CableSHARK is connected to the lead on the negative side of the CO battery, the TIP connection
connected to the lead on the positive side of the CO battery and the GROUND connection to ground at
the CO.
3. Press the RUN / STOP button to start the test. Depending upon the CO line card properties and
whether it is active or not, the Ground Resistance measurement will give the user the station voltage,
the loop current, the loop impedance and the ground resistance. Resistance values of less than 25
ohms are considered acceptable. Anything over 25 ohms means there is a ground resistance problem.
To repeat the test, press the RUN/STOP button.
