TDR:

Time Domain Reflectometry

- Selecting TDR from the CABLE TESTS pop-up menu

invokes the TDR SETUP menu. The TDR determines if the copper cable is suitable to
carry DSL technologies by locating potential faults along the line such as a bridge tap
or end of cable. Similar to FDR.

FDR:

Frequency Domain Reflectometry

- Selecting FDR from the CABLE TESTS pop-up

menu invokes the FDR SETUP menu. The FDR determines if the copper cable is
suitable to carry DSL technologies by locating potential faults along the line such as a
bridge tap or end of cable. Similar to TDR.

NOISE:

Selecting

NOISE

from the CABLE TESTS pop-up menu invokes the NOISE TEST

SETUP

menu. The noise test setup allows a user to perform a Power Spectral Noise,

Impulse Noise, and Impulse Noise Histogram test on the line. These noise tests help
determine if the line has too much noise to properly qualify the cable under test.
Impulse Noise is a definite source of data transmission errors.

LONGITUDINA
L BALANCE:

Selecting LONGITUDINAL BALANCE from the CABLE TESTS pop-up menu invokes
the LONGITUDINAL BALANCE SETUP menu. The longitudinal balance test ensures
that the twisted pair is balanced. A properly balanced cable allows the cable to be
resistant to common mode noise.

LOAD COIL:

Selecting

LOAD COIL

from the CABLE TESTS pop-up menu invokes the LOAD

COIL SETUP

menu. The load coil test assists the user in determining if there is

any load coil on the cable under test.

SPECTRAL
DETECTIVE:

Spectral Detective

– Used to determine whether or not a signal from an adjacent

pair is too strong thus causing spectral incompatibility to the circuit under test. This
function button will only appear if the SPECTRAL DETECTIVE option is installed
on the CableSHARK.

RETURN LOSS:

The function associated with RETURN LOSS invokes the RETURN LOSS SETUP
screen. This test allows users to run a Return Loss measurement over 2 pairs of
wires. The CableSHARK measures voltage ratios, comparing the built-in reference
impedance to the external measured impedance and calculating the return loss
from that.

SHDSL

The function associated with SHDSL invokes the SHDSL DATA RATE
PREDICTION TEST SETUP screen. This test allows users to determine the
predicted data rate possible on a circuit by evaluating the reflected signal and the
measured background noise. Tests for SHDSL Annex A and Annex B are
available.
