Creating a file System — SFS20 storage

5–15

The configuration shown in this example would allow you to create an MDS service that uses two LUNs, and

four OST services that use one LUN each on the arrays connected to the

south3

,

south4

,

south5

, and

south6

servers. In this situation, you probably do not need to change the role of any of the existing LUNs

and you can proceed to Section 5.2.2 to identify the file system information.

However, in very small HP SFS systems, the default LUN roles that are set by the

configure array

command may be unsuitable. For example, the following system has only two servers and two SFS20 arrays.

sfs> show lun

LUN Array Role Used by Size(GB) Preferred Server Visible to
--- ----- ----- ---------- -------- ---------------- ----------
1 1 service south1 1 - south[1-2]
2 1 adm south1 40

- south[1-2]

3 1 mds - 500 south2 south[1-2]
4 1 mds - 500 south2 south[1-2]
5 2 svcspare - 1 - south[1-2]
6 2 admspare - 40

- south[1-2]

7 2 mds - 500 south2 south[1-2]
8 2 mds - 500 south2 south[1-2]

Arrays 1 and 2 are connected to the MDS server (

south2

); consequently, the

configure array

command automatically assigned a role of MDS to LUNs 3, 4, 7, and 8 (on arrays 1 and 2). To be able to

use LUNs 4 and 8 for OST services, you must change the role of these LUNs from MDS to OST. Use the

set lun

command to change the role, as shown in the following example. Do not specify a user for the

LUN—the user is automatically assigned when the file system is set up (see Section 5.2.3):

sfs> set lun 4 role=ost
sfs> set lun 8 role=ost

Note that if you make a mistake while changing LUN roles, you can use the

set lun

command again to

change the role to another value.

NOTE:

You must only change the role of LUNs that are not being used in an existing file system—that is,

the

Used by

field for the LUN must be empty.

Do not change the role of administration (

adm

) or service (

service

) LUNs.

The role of a spare service LUNs (

svcspare

) and the spare administration LUN (

admspare

) can only be

changed if you are replacing an SFS20 storage array.

When you have assigned the LUN roles as necessary, proceed to Section 5.2.2 to identify the file system

information.

5.2.2 Step 2: Identifying file system information — SFS20 storage

NOTE:

The short system name (that is, the system name without the domain name) is used in file system

configuration. If you have more than one HP SFS system with the same short system name (for example,

south.my.domain.com

and

south.fs.com

), you must create a nickname for one of the systems. If a

system nickname is needed, create it before you create the file system. See Section 5.9 for information on

how to do this.

The

create filesystem

command is used to set up file systems. A series of questions prompts you to

enter the required information. An example of creating a file system is shown in Section 5.2.3. Before you

set up a file system, identify the information you will need, including the following:
