Examining the Quadrics adapter and interconnect link

This section describes how to identify and isolate problems on the Quadrics interconnect. The procedures

described in this section apply only to the portion of the interconnect that connects the server in the HP SFS

system to the switch infrastructure of the Quadrics interconnect. Specifically, diagnosing problems with links

within or between switches is not covered in this manual. It is assumed that switch monitoring and use of the

Pandora graphical diagnostic tool (from Quadrics, Ltd.) is performed by and on the client system to which

the HP SFS system is connected.

Read this section in conjunction with the diagnostics manual of the client system (if one is provided). For

example, for an HP XC system, the diagnostics are described in the HP XC System Software Administration

Guide.

To verify that the Quadrics interconnect is working correctly, perform the following procedures:

1.

Test for the presence of the Quadrics interconnect adapter (see Section 6.1.8.3.1).

2.

Run the

qselantest

diagnostics (see Section 6.1.8.3.2).

6.1.8.3.1 Testing for presence of Quadrics adapter

You can test for the presence of a Quadrics adapter by logging in to the server to be tested and entering

the following command on the server:

# cat /proc/qsnet/ep/rail0/state

running NodeId=40 NumNodes=128

If the output shows that the

/proc/qsnet/elan4/device0

does not exist, either there is no Quadrics

adapter in the server or the device driver failed to load. You can check for error messages from the Quadrics

driver in the log that is output from the

show log

command. Enter the commands shown in the following

example, where the server to be tested is

south3

:

# sfsmgr
.

.

.

sfs> show log data contains "qsnet" && server=south3-adm

6.1.8.3.2 Running the qselantest diagnostics

NOTE:

The

qselantest

diagnostics support only QM500 PCI-X network adapters (equipped with the

Quadrics Elan4 network processor). If you try to run the

qselantest

diagnostics on QM400 network

adapters (equipped with the Quadrics Elan3 network processor) you will encounter the following error:

qselantest: No QsNet2 devices present

Run the

qselantest

diagnostics as follows:

On the administration server and the MDS server, the

qselantest

diagnostics are installed locally.

To run the diagnostics on the administration or MDS server, log in to the server to be tested and enter

the following command:

# /usr/bin/qselantest

See Section 6.1.8.3.3 for an example of output from a

qselantest

test that detected no errors.

The

qselantest

diagnostics are not installed locally on Object Storage Servers. If the server you

are testing is an Object Storage Server, you must run the administration server’s copy of the

qselantest

diagnostics over the network. To do this, you must use NFS to temporarily export the

administration server drive. Note that this is an exceptional case—using NFS on an Object Storage

Server is not generally supported, as it may seriously interfere with Lustre operation.
