9.27 Troubleshooting file system performance
In some circumstances, the performance of a Lustre file system may seem to be less than optimal. There are
a number of tests that you can run to assess whether the system is performing within the prescribed limits;
these tests, and the steps you can take to remedy possible problems, are described in this section.
This section is organized as follows:
•
Performance troubleshooting (Section 9.27.1)
•
Verifying file striping (Section 9.27.2)
•
Checking for unbalanced distribution of OST services (Section 9.27.3)
•
Checking for unbalanced controllers in EVA4000 arrays (Section 9.27.4)
•
Examining the system logs for errors (Section 9.27.5)
•
Examining EVA4000 storage subsystems for errors (Section 9.27.6)
•
Examining SFS20 storage subsystems for errors (Section 9.27.7)
•
Examining the interconnect switch for errors (Section 9.27.8)
•
Verifying performance statistics on Fibre Channel switches (Section 9.27.9)
•
Troubleshooting slow commit messages (Section 9.27.10)

Performance troubleshooting
Table 9-1 describes a systematic approach to examining file system performance. Some of the steps are
further expanded in referenced sections.

Performance troubleshooting tasks
Task
Process
1.
Verify that the settings and firmware
versions on the system components are
correct.
1.
Using the firmware version information in the
HP StorageWorks Scalable File Share Release Notes, verify
that the following components are running the correct
firmware version. If necessary, upgrade the firmware to the
correct version:
a. The iLO controller and BIOS-System ROM on the ProLiant
DL servers in the HP SFS system (refer to Chapter 6 and
Chapter 7 of the HP StorageWorks Scalable File Share
System Installation and Upgrade Guide for more
information).
b. EVA4000 storage:
•
Storage HBAs.
•
Fibre Channel switches
•
Storage controllers.
c. SFS20 storage:
•
SFS20 storage enclosures.
•
Smart Array 6404s.
2.
Verify the settings on the servers in the HP SFS system (refer to
Chapter 6 and Chapter 7 of the HP StorageWorks Scalable
File Share System Installation and Upgrade Guide for more
information).
3.
Verify that the firmware on the client nodes is up to date
(check the latest documentation for the client node for
information on the recommended firmware version).
4.
Verify that the firmware on the interconnect switch is up to
date (check the latest documentation for the switch for
information on the recommended firmware version).
