6.2.1 Configuring default email alert addresses
By default, all alert emails are sent to the system default email alert address(es). HP strongly recommends
that you configure one or more default email addresses other than (or in addition to) the
root
user, which
is the default value. If you did not configure default email alert addresses during system installation or
upgrade, you can do so now, as follows:
1.
Enter the
configure system
command.
2.
Select the
Network Services
menu option.
3.
Select the
Default Alert e-mail address
item and then enter the default email address. You
can use a comma-separated list to specify multiple addresses.
4.
Confirm the data and select
Exit
to save your updates.
5.
Enter the
configure server
command for the administration server and the MDS server, as
shown in the following example:
sfs> configure server south[1-2]
6.2.2 Configuring email alerts
An email alert contains the following information:
•
An email alert name.
This is the name that you assign to the email alert. You can use any name you wish, but each alert
name must be unique. The alert name is used by the system to identify the alert.
•
An email alert filter.
The system monitors all events and compares them with the filter on the alert. When an event that
matches the alert filter occurs, the alert is triggered.
•
A list of email addresses (optional).
If an email address is not specified on the alert, the email is sent to the system default email alert
address(es). Typically, most email alerts will be sent to the default address(es), but you can change
one or more alerts to use different email addresses.
•
An email alert throttle period, in minutes.
A throttle period can be specified to limit the number of times an alert is triggered within a certain
time period. When a throttle period is specified, the first event that matches the alert filter triggers the
alert and email is sent. For the duration of the throttle, subsequent events that match the filter do not
trigger the alert. A throttle value of
0
(zero) disables throttling.
You can create multiple email alerts, each with a different event filter and list of email addresses. For
example, you could create an alert that specifies that each event with a severity of warning (
warn
) results
in an email being sent to an address that simply saves a record of events. A second alert could specify that
each event with a severity of critical (
crit
) results in an email being sent to a different email address that
forwards such messages to a pager system.
As soon as an email alert is created, the system starts to compare events with the filter specified in the alert,
and sends email when an event matches the filter. To stop an alert from triggering email, you can delete the
alert or you can disable it. If you disable the alert, you can later enable it again without having to enter
details (filter and email addresses) again.
