Overview

1–4

All of the software that is needed to operate the HP SFS system is installed from the HP StorageWorks

Scalable File Share System Software CD-ROM. You do not need to, nor should you, install any other

software on an HP SFS system.

1.1.3 HP SFS configurations

The HP SFS system is comprised of the following components:

Administration server, MDS server, and associated storage

Object Storage Servers and associated storage

Management network

Connection to one or more system interconnects

Connection to the site network

Figure 1-2 shows the overall architecture of an HP SFS system. A number of configurations are possible, all

of which fit into this architecture. All servers in the HP SFS system are also connected to the management

network; this connection is not shown in Figure 1-2.

HP SFS system architecture

The HP SFS system components are described in this section, which is organized as follows:

Object Storage Servers (Section 1.1.3.1)

Storage (Section 1.1.3.2)

Network connections (Section 1.1.3.3)

1.1.3.1

Object Storage Servers

In an HP SFS system, servers are organized in pairs (server pairs), and the administration server and the

MDS server are always configured as a server pair. The administration service normally runs on the first

server in the system, while the MDS service runs on the second server. The minimum number of servers

required is two, that is, one server pair. In a system that has only one server pair, OST services run on both

servers, as well as the administration service and the MDS service.

HP SFS systems that have more than two servers can support the following configurations:

More than two Object Storage Servers, where one server pair doubles as the administration and

MDS server pair (that is, incremental additions to the minimal configuration)
