Section 9
Managing Partitions, Virtual Machine
Monitors, and Virtual Machines
A partition is one or more cells running a single instance of an operating system.
A virtual machine monitor (VMM) is the base component that enables virtualization. A
virtual machine monitor is a logical computer instance based on permanent physical
hardware that runs specialized software to host virtual machines and service partitions.
VMware ESX Server is an example of a virtual machine monitor.
A virtual machine (VM) is a collection of virtual IT assets (processors, memory, and so
on) that can be used to run a single guest operating system. A virtual machine is created
by a virtual machine monitor. It is not permanently associated with any physical
hardware, and its physical resources can be reassigned and reallocated by the virtual
machine monitor. A virtual machine resides in the same physical partition as the virtual
machine monitor that created the virtual machine.
Managing partitions, virtual machine monitors, and virtual machines involves tasks such
as
y
Viewing operating status and configuration information
y
Setting performance threshold limits for operating data
y
Viewing and handling events and alerts
y
Creating graphs of system performance for tracking, historical, and planning
purposes
y
Operating Express5800/A1160 partitions remotely using Console Manager
y
Managing partitions of systems other than the Express5800/A1160 system
Use the following interfaces to perform the procedures in this section:
y
Remote console interfaces (when managing individual partitions and virtual
machine monitors)
y
ESMPRO Manager (when managing system performance and setting threshold
limits)
