digital gauge. For the purpose of this protocol, a gauge with an electronic pres-
sure sensor and digital display capable of reading in tenths of a Pascal.
door fan. A calibrated fan capable of measuring airfl ow that is temporarily mounted
in a doorway. This term is more correct than the common term “blower
door,” since it is not a “door” but a “fan” and does not use a “blower.”
enclosure. The surface bounding a volume, which is connected to the outdoors
directly. For example, an apartment whose only access to the outdoors is
through a doorway that leads directly outdoors, or a building with a series
of apartments or offi ces whose only access to the outdoors is through a
common hallway. The enclosure is the volume that bounds all the apart-
ments and offi ces.
energy assessment. A review of a building’s envelope, HVAC equipment, pro-
cess equipment, operations, products, and so forth to determine an under-
standing of the energy consumption profi le of the building and to look for
ways to improve energy effi ciency and reduce operating costs of the facility
by recommending changes to the building, equipment, or control strategies.
energy audit. Another term for energy assessment.
energy conservation measure (ECM). A physical or operational change to a
building with the goal of reducing its overall energy consumption.
energy management system (EMS). Similar to the building automation
system (BAS) and building management system (BMS). A digital control
system that is used to monitor and possibly control the function, opera-
tion, schedules, and/or optimization of the central plant equipment, the
HVAC equipment, process equipment, and/or building conditions (e.g.,
lights, temperature) from a central location. This may be one system for
an entire complex of buildings or one building or system.
Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD). The EPBD Build-
ings Platform is a European Commission initiative in the framework of
the Intelligent Energy–Europe (2003–2006) program, which provides
information services for practitioners and consultants, experts in energy
agencies, interest groups, and national policy makers in the European
Member States for helping the implementation of the European Energy
Performance of Buildings Directive (www.buildingsplatform.org).
envelope. See enclosure.
exterior enclosure. The addition of the word exterior emphasizes the fact that we
are primarily dealing with enclosures that face the outdoors. The boundary or
air barrier separating the interior conditioned volume of a building from the
outside environment. This represents the enclosure that faces the “exterior”
but is actually measured from inside the building. See also enclosure.
fan-pressurization method. A term used in the ASTM standard that does an
acceptable job describing what a door fan test is, except for the danger that
it may lead us to mistakenly believe that depressurization is not an option.
fault detection and diagnosis. Detects the problem and identifi es the nature
or cause of the problem.
