Heated tanks have hot vapors rising above them that represent a loss of heat.
The vaporization of water from these tanks removes heat that the heating coil in
the tank must replace to maintain the tank’s temperature. If this vaporization can
be reduced, then the energy loss is reduced. Some heated tanks require parts to
be placed in the tanks for some period of time, and thus a cover could be closed
over top of the heated tank. An alternative is a material that fl oats on top of the
heated fl uid, such as small balls, to reduce the vaporization (Figure D177).
