D.2.1.3 Ventilation Equipment Operating When Not Needed
(Waste)
Figure D32. Paint booth exhaust operating when no
painting is occurring.
Ventilation fans are used to supply outside air to occupied spaces and are used
to exhaust spaces such as restrooms, showers, kitchens, and so on (e.g., Figure
D32). When the spaces are not occupied or the process such as cooking, dish-
washing, and so forth is not in operation, the fans can be turned off. This can
be accomplished with timers or by modifying the building automation control
system.
D.2.1.4 Use of Conditioned Air for Hood Makeup Air (Waste)
Figure D33. Supply air outlets in kitchen adjacent to cooking
hood that deliver heated air into space.
Makeup air is used to offset the exhaust of conditioned air from around the area
being exhausted. An example is a kitchen hood that is used to exhaust the heat,
products of combustion, and particles of the cooking process from the kitchen
(Figure D33). This exhaust air can be replaced with outdoor air in lieu of using
conditioned air within the space. Using outdoor air reduces the energy needed
to cool or heat the conditioned air that would otherwise be exhausted.
