L8 ENERGY & PROCESS ASSESSMENT PROTOCOL
3.2.14 Landscape irrigation: Use trickle or subsurface drip irrigation systems that provide wa-
ter directly to turf roots, preventing water loss by evaporation and runoff.
3.215 Install low-fl ow toilets.
3.2.16 Install waterless urinals.
3.2.17 Install water conservation device (reduced pumping and water heating).
3.2.18 Use water reclamation techniques.
3.2.19 Water-conserving dishwashers.
4 Energy Generation and Distribution
4.1 Boiler System
4.1.1 Install air-atomizing burners for oil-fi red boiler systems.
4.1.2 Install automatic boiler blow-down control.
4.1.3 Install automatic vent dampers on boilers.
4.1.4 Install fl ue gas analyzers for boilers.
4.1.5 Install an automatic fl ue damper to close the fl ue when not fi ring.
4.1.6 Install turbulators to improve heat transfer effi ciency in older fi re tube boilers.
4.1.7 Install low–excess air burners.
4.1.8 Install condensing economizers.
4.1.9 Install electric ignitions instead of pilot lights.
4.1.10 Install an automatic combustion control system to monitor the combustion of exit gases
and adjust the intake air for large boilers.
4.1.11 Isolate offl ine boilers.
4.1.12 Maintain insulation on heat distribution system. Replace insulation after the system re-
pair.
4.1.13 Provide proper water treatment to reduce fouling.
4.1.14 Replace central plant with distributed satellite systems.
4.1.15 Replace satellite boilers with central plant.
4.1.16 Downsize boilers with optimum burner size and forced draft (FD) fans.
4.1.17 Shut down large boilers during summer and use smaller boilers.
4.1.18 Upgrade natural gas–fi red boilers with new controls (low NOx burners).
4.1.19 Check expansion tank sizes on hot water systems.
4.1.20 Heat recovery through de-superheating.
4.1.21 Install booster pumps on hot water systems.
4.1.22 Preheat feedwater with reclaimed waste heat.
4.1.23 Provide for avoiding artifi cial loading (hot gas bypass at low loads).
4.1.24 Preheat combustion air, feed water, or fuel oil with reclaimed waste heat.
4.1.25 Reclaim heat from boiler blowdown.
4.1.26 Reclaim heat from combustion system fl ue.
4.1.27 Reclaim heat from prime movers.
