Appendix D D5

D.1.1.4 Damaged or Poor-Quality Wall Insulation

Figure D6. Left to right: poorly installed and damaged exterior insulation and fi nish system;
wetted perlite material due to the water damage.

Poor design, bad architectural detailing, and craftsmanship typically result in
problems with building insulation, and air and vapor barriers. Excessive heat
losses and gains may result due to the overall wall low R-value and increased
air leakage, which may increase sensible and latent loads on heating and cool-
ing systems, as well as the potential for water damage to wall insulation and
condensation and mold growth in humid climates (Figure D6).

D.1.1.5 Open Courtyard (Waste)

Figure D7. Extended building envelope due to courtyard.

Open courtyards (Figure D7) can cause excessive heat losses and gains through
the extended building envelope (external wall surfaces that can be reduced). This
results in an additional sensible and latent load on the heating and cooling systems.
Courtyards converted into atriums can reduce the external wall surface.
