D.4.1.33 Boiler Location Remote from Area Served (Ineffi ciency)

Figure D110. Small boiler serving individual
building.

It is common with central energy systems for some of the heating demands to
be somewhat remote from the boiler location. This situation occurs especially
with heating needs that are year-round process–related or when areas served
by the system change function. The result of this situation is an abnormally
high distribution loss for the energy consumed by the remote users. The alter-
native would be to locate a local boiler adjacent to the remote users (Figure
D110); the distribution piping would be deenergized to avoid those losses. An
example of this situation is the guard houses at site entry points.

D.4.2 Chiller System

D.4.2.1 Water Flow through Shutdown Equipment (Waste)

In chiller systems that have multiple chillers, only seldom are all the chillers
required to operate. When a chiller is shut down, there should be no fl ow to
that chiller. If chilled water or condenser water continues to fl ow through the
offl ine chiller, pumping energy is being wasted. A higher load is also placed on
