D.7.3.3 Lack of Task Lighting and Lighting Levels Greater Than
322.8 lux (30 Footcandles) (Waste)
Figure D180. Machine shop having fl uorescent
lamps over total work area. There may be a
potential for the use of task lights.
An assembly operation is an area where a number of tasks are accomplished
as various parts are put together to form a complete system. Some of these
tasks may require a higher light level for an operator to accomplish than other
tasks (Figure D180). This would require either that the area’s lighting system
deliver a higher level of lighting intensity or that task (supplemental) lighting
be used at those workstations where higher lighting levels are needed. If task
lighting is provided, the intensity of the area light can be reduced, and energy
is saved. The appropriate lighting level for movement and assembly of normal-
sized components with bolts and screws in an industrial space is 322.8 lux (30
footcandles).
D.7.4 Welding
D.7.4.1 Using Continuous Operating Welding Exhaust (Waste)
Figure D181. Welding shop that has a constant volume centralized welding exhaust system that
operates continuously (left); recirculating local exhaust system (right).
The operation of welding requires time to prepare the metal area, to set of the
parts to be bonded together, and then to clean the welds for a fi nished look
