N.3 Interpretation of data by Intelligent Monitoring

This chapter gives some examples of how to use visualization to identify wastes
and ineffi ciencies in building operation. There are various ways to present con-
sumption data in different contexts. Each of them gives a special view on the
data and allows making specifi c features more obvious.

N.3.1 Comparison of yearly data

Yearly data from a specifi c year are suitable to benchmark buildings. To make
energy consumptions comparable, it is necessary to use specifi c rather than
absolute consumption data measured in kWh/m

2

or comparable units. Usually

for such comparisons national benchmark data are available. Samples are given
in the EnerGo toolkit and allow there to get a fi rst impression from building
behavior.

In Figure N1 we compare the energy costs for various buildings at the Uni-

versity of Stuttgart campus. This is described in more detail in the University
of Stuttgart Case study presented in the EnerGo toolkit. The comparison is
used to classify the buildings to determine further energy assessment efforts.
Steps are:

Classify buildings according energy consumption

Select buildings with highest potential Level 0

Audit the selected buildings by Level 1 analyses

Choose buildings which justify further analysis efforts

Install measurement system according Level 2 analysis (use minimal

data set) and determine baseline
If necessary perform Level 3 analysis for selected components

Implement ECMs

Implement monitoring system with rule based monitoring
