D118 ENERGY & PROCESS ASSESSMENT PROTOCOL
D7.5.2 Excessive Air Bleed-in through Leaks (Waste)
Vacuum air systems that are poorly maintained may have a signifi cant amount
of leaks. If a good leak detection and repair program is implemented, these
leaks can be nearly eliminated. A high rate of leaks requires unnecessary equip-
ment to operate and can cause system pressure increases that can affect the
performance of process equipment adjacent to the leak. Common leak loca-
tions are at couplings, fi ttings, hoses, pipe joints, and valves. It is best to look
for leaks when the production equipment is not operating—on a weekend, or
in the middle of the night. The use of an ultrasonic detector will aid greatly in
fi nding these leaks.
D.7.6 Assembly
D.7.6.1 Lack of Task Lighting and Lighting Levels Greater Than
322.8 lux (30 Footcandles) (Ineffi ciency)

area and smaller lamps on extension cord.
An assembly operation is an area where a number of tasks are accomplished
as various parts are put together to form a complete system. Some of these
tasks may require a higher light level for an operator to accomplish than other
tasks. This would require the area’s lighting system to deliver this higher level
of lighting intensity, or task (supplemental) lighting could be employed at those
workstations where the higher level are needed. If task lighting is provided,
then the intensity of the area light can be reduced and energy is saved (Figure
D185). The appropriate lighting level for movement and assembly of normal
size components with bolts and screws in an industrial space is 322.8 lux (30
footcandles).
