Drafts through large external apertures (doors) not protected by vestibules can
result in excessive heating and cooling loads on the building HVAC systems
(Figures D27–D30). In industrial and administrative buildings, cold and warm
air drafts through the doors result in worker discomfort in adjacent areas. Also,
in industrial buildings, some processes require local exhausts (e.g., plating,
welding, kitchens); drafts through the doors can cause a transfer of contami-
nants into the space by blowing them away from the capture hoods into the
space. These conditions normally cause a requirement for higher capture hood
velocities for the proper removal of these contaminants which in turn increases
the make-up air fl ow rate.
