D144 ENERGY & PROCESS ASSESSMENT PROTOCOL

D.7.11 Virtual Training Facilities

D.7.11.1 Unnecessary Low Room Air Temperature Resulting in
Discomfort, Energy Waste, and Condensation on Cold Surfaces
Causes Mold in These Spaces (Waste)

Figure D236. Training facility with an unnecessary low air temperature (top row), low supply
air temperature in combination with the absence of humidistat results in mold growth on cold
surfaces (bottom row).

Environmental requirements for older training facilities are most often based
on temperature and humidity requirements of older equipment and electronic
components (Figure D236). ASHRAE’s Design Considerations for Datacom
Equipment Centers (ASHRAE 2004) gives recommended and allowable condi-
tions for Datacom Equipment Centers. PEO STRI provides the following ther-
mal specifi cation for the Close Combat Tactical Trainer and Flight Simulators:

The temperature inside a manned module shall not exceed 26.7 °C (80 °F)

when operated at full capacity with full personnel loading given a maximum
ambient environment of 23.9 °C (75 °F) with a relative humidity of 30–70%.

In a simulator room cockpit and motion system operate normally in a com-

fort-controlled environment at a temperature of 23.9 °C (75 °F) (± 12.2 °C
(10 °F)) and at a relative humidity of 50% (±5%).

Also, newer equipment produces less heat into the space. However, in many

cases of process equipment change, HVAC systems are not commissioned to
meet new loads.
