Chapter 12

Configuring Async Ports

Introduction

The integral Async PAD function in the SmartSwitch 1800 allows asynchronous
devices to connect to a frame relay or X.25 network.

Required Configuration

To run a port as an integral async PAD in a SmartSwitch 1800, make sure the fol-
lowing are properly configured:

Node parameters

(Chapter 4). This is general configuration that must be done

no matter which protocols will be run in the node.

Async PAD Profiles

(page 12-2), which define the operation of the attached

devices.

Login parameters

(page 12-7), which define passwords to be used when logging

into the SmartSwitch.

Loaded protocols

(Chapter 5): Async, plus frame relay or X.25.

Async port(s)

(page 12-8), plus

frame relay

(Chapter 7) or

X.25

(Chapter 8)

port(s) that will connect to the user device(s) and network.

Subscriber IDs

(page 12-15), which identifiy user devices to each other and the

SmartSwitch.

Abbreviated address(es)

(page 12-17), if desired. This feature (described later in

this chapter) allows short "nicknames" to be assigned to subscriber addresses, to
ease entry of addresses.

PVC connections

(page 12-18), which create "permanent" connections between

two ports in the node. A PVC can be created between two async ports or
between an async port and an X.25 port.
