Entering Initial Serial and Ethernet Settings

Using UniConfig, communication parameters are entered that enable the router to communicate
with UniConfig, and the router control system to communicate with the router. To set communica-
tion parameters, several steps must be performed:

1 Serial connection settings are entered for the router and the router control system.

2 Serial connection settings are entered for UniConfig.

3 Ethernet connection settings are entered for the router so that the router can communicate over

a network. These settings are used by the router control system if the router control system uses
an Ethernet connection.

4 Ethernet connection settings are entered for UniConfig so that UniConfig can communicate

with the router control cards through a network. Routers are added to a network through a sepa-
rate procedure. (See

Adding a Control Card to a Network

on page 41.)

Although you can choose to only communicate with the router and/or router control system using a
serial connection, both Ethernet and serial communication parameters are provided in the proceed-
ing procedure. It is strongly recommended that an Ethernet connection between the router and Uni-
Config be established for ease of use and efficiency. (See

Ethernet vs. Serial

on page 21.)

How to Enter Communication Parameters

1 Connect to the temporary diagnostic connection on the primary control card. (See

Control Card

Serial Port (Temporary Connection)

on page 23.) The Baud rate is fixed at 9600.

2 Launch UniConfig. (See

Launching UniConfig

on page 9.)

3 From the menu bar, select ‘Communications > Serial’. This informs UniConfig that communi-

cation with the router is through a serial port.

4 Again from the menu bar, select ‘Communication > Setup’. The ‘Serial Communications’ dia-

log box appears:

Figure 6-2. Serial Communication Dialog Box

The ‘Serial Communications’ dialog box sets the serial communication parameters for UniCon-
fig. By default the ‘Comm port’ is set to ‘None’ and the ‘Baud rate’ is set to ‘9600’, matching
the settings of the control card serial port.
