11. Managing Machine Control Ports

Updating Machine Control Port Switching

To update a single machine control switching configuration, that is, changing what one port sends
to another port, enter the new port to port that you want to configure and perform a single ‘take’.

Unique to machine control signals, any given port may only connect to itself (tri-stated) or to one
other bidirectional port. Because of this, port connections are exclusive, requiring prior connec-
tions, if they exist, to first be broken before a new connection can be established. Only single ports
can be reconfigured, not a range of ports..

How to Update Switching Configurations

1 Launch UniConfig. (See

Launching UniConfig

on page 9.)

2 Select a control card. (See

Selecting a Control Card

on page 10.)

3 From the menu bar, select ‘Window > Connections’. The ‘Connections’ window appears, as

shown in Figure 11-2.

4 Select the ‘Machine Control’ tab to bring it to the front, as shown in Figure 11-5.

5 In the ‘Physical Output Range’ section, enter a ‘Start’ and ‘End’ number in the fields provided

and click

Read Outputs

. The corresponding ports display on the tab.

If the ‘Machine Control’ tab is blank, perform a ‘Diagonal Take’, connecting port 1 to port 1,
and so on. When ports are connected to themselves in this manner, the port’s connections are
automatically tri-stated. (See

Testing Machine Control Ports Switching

on page 108.)

6 To perform a single ‘take’ of a single input to a single output, perform the following:

Enter the new ‘Input’ and ‘Output’ in the fields provided in the ‘Single Take’ section. For
example, if currently input 1 switches to output 3, and you want input 1 to switch to output 6,
enter 6 in the ‘Output’ field.
Click

Execute

. A ‘take’ is performed based on the ‘take’ format selected. (See

Setting Machine

Control Take Preferences

on page 104.)

7 (Optionally) create a switching configuration “salvo”. For more information, see

Working With

Salvos

on page 145.

8 Repeat steps 2–6 for each control card being updated.

Note

A port must be in ‘Dynamic’ mode in the ‘Machine Control Setup’ window in
order to make changes in the ‘Connections’ window. (See

Setting Up Machine

Control Ports

on page 101.)

Note

Each control card must be configured separately.

Note

When the Machine Control tab is selected, entries in ‘Physical Output Range’
and in ‘Single Take’ fields refer to machine control port numbers, not physical
input or output numbers on the frame.

Note

A port must be in ‘Dynamic’ mode in the ‘Machine Control Setup’ window in
order to make changes in the ‘Connections’ window. (See

Setting Up Machine

Control Ports

on page 101.)
