Communicating with the Router Through Serial Ports

SMS7000 Note

Miranda supports communication with the SMS7000 router control system. The SMS7000 uses a
set of very specific switching and configuration rules. When SMS7000 protocol is loaded onto the
control card, the number of partitions available in UniConfig is restricted to two. Additionally a
communications mezzanine module must be installed on the control card to support the SMS GSC
Node Bus connector. This connector affects the behavior of the ‘CTRL 1’ port.

For those Miranda routers that do not have a GSC Node Bus connector (i.e., NV8288, NV8288-
Plus and the NV8500 Family), an EC9535 GSC Node Bus Converter may be used. For more infor-
mation, contact Technical Support. See

Technical Support Contact Information

on page iii.

Communicating with the Router Through Serial Ports

UniConfig can communicate with the router through Ethernet or serial ports. There are two types of
serial ports: one on the control card and one on the rear of the router. The control card serial port is
located on the front of each control card and is a temporary connection. In other words, you create
the connection as needed. The other serial ports are located on the rear of the router, labeled
‘DIAG’ and are permanent; these connections once created are usually left connected. Miranda rec-
ommends using the control card serial port when configuring or reconfiguring the router because
the port has fixed communication parameters. In addition, because it is on the control card itself, it
is easy to establish communication with the exact control card you want to update. The permanent
ports are usually used for upgrading firmware or control card protocols when there is no Ethernet
connection to the router.

For more information about control cards and diagnostic connections, see your router’s User’s
Guide.

EC9535 Note

The EC9535 GSC Node Bus Converter enables a SMS7000 system controller to communicate with
Miranda routers that do not have a GSC Node Bus connector. For information on setting up
EC9535 serial ports, see

Entering Initial EC9535 Serial and Ethernet Settings

on page 118.

Control Card Serial Port (Temporary Connection)

A temporary connection between a router and UniConfig can be instantly created through the DE9
serial port located on the front of the control card. This connection is set to a fixed rate of
9600 Baud.

Note

The NV8288, NV8288-Plus and NV8500 Family routers have only a rear diag-
nostic port, which is fixed at 38.4

K. This enables the rear port to double as a tem-

porary connection to the control card, as well as a permanent connection. See

Router Serial ‘DIAG’ Port (Permanent Connection)
