6. Setting Up Communication

The control card communicates with UniConfig through an Ethernet or serial port located on the
rear of the router, or through the serial port located on the control card. In order for the control card
and UniConfig to communicate through an Ethernet or serial port located on the router, the ports
need to be initialized. Initialization is performed by setting the necessary information on the control
card using UniConfig.

Because the router Ethernet and rear serial port settings are unknown, a port with fixed setting of
9600 Baud is provided on the front edge of the control card. After the ports are initialized, commu-
nication between UniConfig and the router can occur through an Ethernet connection, through the
serial port on the control card, or through the serial ports located on the rear of the router, labeled
‘DIAG’. (See

Entering Initial Serial and Ethernet Settings

on page 26.)

This section provides information about setting up and managing communication between the
router and UniConfig. For information on setting up EC9535 communication, see

Entering Initial

EC9535 Serial and Ethernet Settings

on page 118.

Communicating with the Router for the First Time

Before UniConfig can establish communication with the router, the communication ports need to
be initialized. Initialization is performed using UniConfig. To enter initial settings, a serial port is
provided on the front edge of the control card. This port has fixed settings that match default serial
port settings in UniConfig to establish immediate communication without having to initialize the
port first. For instructions on establishing this connection, see

Control Card Serial Port (Temporary

Connection)

on page 23.

Initialization has two basic parts: entering settings for the router and entering settings for UniCon-
fig. Settings are entered for each control card individually, and for Ethernet and serial ports sepa-
rately.

Ethernet vs. Serial

There are advantages and limitations to using Ethernet or serial connections to communicate with
UniConfig. Miranda recommends using an Ethernet connection for ease of use and faster download
speeds.

Note

Each control card utilizes its own independent set of EE memory on the mother-
board in the router frame. UniConfig must be used to configure each control card
in the system separately even if the control card is part of a redundant pair.
