2. Introduction
UniConfig is a software application used to set up and modify configuration settings for Miranda
routers and perform diagnostics. UniConfig runs on a unit external to the router, such as a PC, and
communicates with the router through the router’s control card. UniConfig configures the router by
configuring settings on the router control card. Configuration settings vary depending upon matrix
type, the protocol in use, and the level of complexity of the router partitioning.
Product Overview
UniConfig configures the router by configuring settings on the router control card. Configuration
settings vary depending upon matrix type, the protocol in use, and the level of complexity of the
router partitioning.
The router control card facilitates communication between an external control device—a router
control system—and the router matrix hardware. Protocols are used to send commands from the
router control system to the control card. The discussion throughout this chapter assumes that Uni-
Config is interacting with an Miranda router control system using Miranda’s proprietary control
protocol. The Miranda protocol is always available through the Ethernet connections and serial
‘CTRL 2’ connections. Other protocols are active on the serial ‘CTRL 1’ connection only. The con-
trol card allows only one third-party protocol to be loaded at any one time. For information on
changing control system protocols, contact Miranda Technical Support. For contact information,

Storing Configuration Settings
Configuration settings are stored in non-volatile EEPROM (EE) memory located on the router
motherboard. The EE memory stores all configuration settings entered through UniConfig, but not
the matrix crosspoint switching data. Crosspoint data is stored on the control card in battery
backed-up RAM. This allows a control card to be moved from one router to another and have the
card properly initialize. When the card initializes in a new router, data is forwarded to the cross-
point array. Each control card has its own unique memory and must be configured separately.
Utilities
UniConfig can be used to perform a variety of utilities, such as running diagnostics or viewing sys-
tem status. In addition, UniConfig can be used to test and update router crosspoint switching con-
figuration independent of the router control system.
UniConfig is periodically updated with new features and functionality. Contact Miranda for the lat-
est version of UniConfig. See
