6 Receiving and Managing Software Packages
This chapter defines the various software packages used in NonStop and describes how to use
NonStop Software Essentials and other software management tools to perform the following
activities:
•
“Preparing to Receive Software” (page 78)
•
“Receiving Software Into the Archive” (page 79)
•
“Managing Software Packages in the Archive” (page 83)
A software package consists of one or more products from HP, customer, or third-party software
on either disk or tape. When software is received into the DSM/SCM archive on a host system,
the files from each product are stored in the archive, and the file attributes are stored in the
database. The types of software packages are:
Full release version update. Contains an ordered combination of compatible software. A full RVU
includes all the files, support information, and softdocs for each product.
RVU
Update software product revision. An update to a software product. For NonStop products, a softdoc
describing the changes is included. An SPR can include some or all files for a product.
Update SPR
Initial product version update (or base software product revision). A NonStop product that contains
new functions. Also, customer and third-party software can be brought into the archive as Initial PVUs.
Initial PVU (or
Base SPR)
Independent Product. A NonStop product released independently of the regular HP release schedule.

Preparing to Receive Software
You must know the location of the software package to be received; for example, the tape or disk
drive, a TAPESIM mounted virtual tape, a subvolume after running IPSetup, etc. If you do not use
the default location specified in the configuration profile, you will need this location later to specify
the package source.
Before you can receive customer and third-party software into the archive, you may need to use
CNFGINFO, from a supported PC, to add the necessary configuration information if the software
was not already packaged with CNFGINFO. See
Appendix C: “Running CNFGINFO”
.
TIP:
NonStop Software Essentials allows you to search for subvolumes which are DSVs.
Define Product Attributes for Third-Party Products
All received software files must have an associated A0CINFO file. HP always includes an A0CINFO
file with its software, but third-party software might not. For a third-party product with no A0CINFO
file, you must use the CNFGINFO tool to create one before receiving the product into the archive.
For more information on using CNFGINFO, see
Appendix C: “Running CNFGINFO”
.
Determine the Current SYSnn
1.
From a TACL prompt, determine the current SYSnn:
> status 0,0
2.
Note the SYSnn. You need it if you back out a revision.
Save the Existing Configuration Database
HP highly recommends that you save the existing configuration database before each time you
use NonStop Software Essentials to receive software. You need the saved configuration if you later
need to back out to a previous revision.
