Managing Software Packages and Files in the Archive

To optimize archive space, NonStop Software Essentials ensures files are not duplicated in the
archive. If two software packages contain identical files, as often occurs, the files are stored with
the first archived package and are referenced by pointers in the second archived package. This
saves considerable archive space. However, when a software package is deleted or backed up,
any files common to other packages or configuration revisions are not removed from the archive.
Therefore, deleting or backing up archive contents to manage disk space used by the archive might
not save as much space as you expect.

If any configuration revision references files are associated with a software package, you cannot
delete that package until you delete the revision. When you try to delete a package, NonStop
Software Essentials determines whether a configuration references any files associated with it.
However, you can back up the package, which returns any space not shared with other packages.

In Figure 17-1, the archive contains packages from two RVUs: X20.00 and X20.01. Typically,
most files do not change between RVUs. In this case, RVU X20.00 contains 450 files, and RVU
X20.01 contains 460 files, with 20 new files and 10 files deleted. 440 files are identical in the
two packages.

Figure 15-1 Files in the Archive

The 440 identical files are stored with the first software package and referenced by pointers from
the second package. The 20 new files are the only additions to the archive for the second package.
If you delete RVU X20.00, only the 10 files not referenced by X20.01 are removed from the
archive. The 440 shared files remain.

To determine which configurations use a specific product in the archive, generate a Configurations
Using a Product report. (See

Chapter 16: “Generating and Viewing Reports”

.) Configuration

revisions in DSM/SCM also reference files in the archive. A configuration revision is a set of
pointers in the database to files in the archive. The archive also stores the system generation output
for configurations, including the OSIMAGE file, which can be quite large.
